Before being elected as India's 15th president. She was the ninth Governor of Jharkhand, serving from 2015 to 2021.
According to the most recent results, she defeated Yashwant Sinha (former diplomat and union cabinet minister) by a massive margin of 5,77,777 votes.
Murmu joined the BJP in 1997 and was elected as a Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat councillor. Murmu was elected Chairman of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 2000.
